Gingrich 2012

Hey everyone,

I know I'll probably get flack for this but I wanted to show you this photo! Newt Gingrich came to my town and I went with my friend to hear him. Afterwards we were able to get our picture taken with Newt and his wife. They are so incredibly humble and nice. I'm proud to support such a strong Conservative!

I'm so pumped to be voting for the first time this year and am so blessed to live in a country where we have freedom and the right to vote. Newt Gingrich is my man of choice!

I chose him without guidance from friends or family, I watched the debates and thought he was wonderful. I'd love to see him in a debate against the current President.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Forever in love with the RED, White and Blue.

The Hunger Games - Review Part 2

Hey everyone!

Well I went and saw The Hunger Games again tonight. I went into it with an open mind, not being so focused on all the book elements and I also had enough sleep. (Considering I went to the 7:30 showing, not the midnight ;)

I was blown away.

Jennifer Lawrence was phenomenal as were the other actors.

Now that I was actually awake I liked the "Cave" scenes more. For the scenes Katniss and Peeta has together, their chemistry was great. Perfectly "in the moment"

I'm still leaving it at 4 out of 5 stars because the camera was so shaky (even though it was used to make the film seem more urgent) but there were a few scenes that got lost in the blurriness.
Also, some of the CGI effects weren't my favorite. Mainly the flaming cape.

I cried so hard during Rue's scene again. I think I'll loose it at that point no matter how many times I watch the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the musical score this time through. You can listen to it here.

You should go see it if you haven't, and you should go see it a second time if you already have.

Kamp is Coming!

Hey everyone!

I'm soooo excited that I'm returning to Kamp Kanakuk for my 5th summer this June! (Sadly that means I'll be leaving my blog pals for a while, but I'll write and have Breanna post!)

We have something called Tribes at Kamp.

There are four Tribes, two girl, two boy.

Kiowa and Kickapoo for the ladies.

Choctaw and Cherokee for the men.

My first year I was "inducted" into my tribe at the tribal ceremony. They read off your name, then your tribe and you're welcomed by all the former Kiowas (or Kickapoos) and they all start cheering. Then throughout the rest of the term you compete against the other tribe and whoever has the most points at the and of the term wins!

I'm a Kiowa.

I love my tribe.

I love my Kiowa sisters.

I ran for Kiowa Princess last year. (Leader of your tribe)

I was blessed and incredibly humbled to be voted runner up, and the 2012 princess is actually the girl who I voted for. She has an amazing heart and can't wait to be under her teaching for a month.

I also made a t-shirt with my tribe symbol (The Kiowa eagle) on it! Want to see?

(Yes that's a mirror pic lol)

I used this tutorial to make the shirt. I can't wait to make more! I'm kinda obsessed with the super cute result. Next thing you know, every top in my closet will have little appliques on them. Tehehe.

Raspberry Animal Print Nail Art

After THG premiere my nail polish started chipping off. I didn't want to go back to plain nails and I didn't want just a single color. I decided I wanted animal print nails with a twist! I'm still in love with the color Miami Beet by OPI and Designer De-Better by OPI. I thought they would be really pretty together and they were!

And look! I even was able to paint the right hand really well!

Right after I painted them I ended up going tanning and the UV light set the polish really well so I hope it stays for a while!

Colors used:
Designer De-Better - OPI
Miami Beet - OPI
Black on Black - Sinful Colors

Twist cones are the mark of indecisive people. I guess I'm indecisive.

Who knew indecisiveness could be so delicious?

A Post About Posts

One of my favorite things to purchase when I'm out and about is a cute pair of post earrings. I thought I'd show you some of my favorites!
Something I discovered while preparing this blog post is apparently I'm rather self conscious about my ears, and I never wear dangle earrings. Haha! I'll include in the caption where I purchased them. Some of the earring are 1-2 years old so you might not be able to get them anymore.

Not sure of where I purchased these.
It was a store in San Diego.

3 Month Surprise!

"Those who are easily shocked, should be shocked more often."
~Mae West

Remember my post about me going to see the Midnight Premier of The Hunger Games?

Well, there was some confusion about tickets before hand. I picked up Liliana a ticket and when she went to purchase her brother one, she forgot and bought herself one too. We had an extra ticket for the movie! We asked around but couldn't seem to find anyone to go with us. Finally Liliana texted me to tell me that our friend Ethan wanted to join us! Thursday night I ventured over to the theater with my pal Ben, and we met another friend Selene. We had a blast watching youtube videos and playing dutch blitz outside the theater waiting for the rest of our group. Around 8:30 I called Ethan to let him know that we were waiting at the theater if he wanted to join us. He said he was going to come when Liliana and her brother came.
A half hour later I saw Liliana's car pull into the parking lot so I started walking over to greet them. Instead of Ethan getting out of the car Cristian did!

It was all a huge plan to surprise me at the theater! He brought me beautiful flowers for our 3 month anniversary too. What a sweetheart!

If you know me, you know I really don't like surprises. I am the girl who likes to know everything about everything. I will say this was a nice one! (But if you're reading this Lil or Cristian, don't surprise me anytime soon ;)

Happy 3 Months To Us!

Welcome To Our Normal

Well pals, this last weekend was a blast! (the 16th -18th)  Breanna came to visit!

We started things out with a visit to a fisherie. (She decided to crash a hot date between Cristian and I, because we all know going to a fish farm is oh so romantic) One of my best friends owns the fish farm and they supply a local Wildlife Santuary's fishing pond. They're closing it soon because of an expansion (I think) so I wanted to show Cristian before it closed. Forever. (Dun dun dun...) Breanna and her mother were due in at any point so I had Breanna join us. It was pretty neat, although it smelled rather "fishy" who would've thought huh? We watched the fish being fed, which they throw a big scoop of fish food pellets in the water. It looks like a mad house all the fish start thrashing about like crazy.. erm fish?

After that we drove home (oh the joys of having a license!) and my dad grilled burgers for us.We've been blessed with such GORGEOUS weather this Spring in the Midwest! It's 80 here today, and was in the high 70's all weekend. After contentedly munching on our burgers all three of us (Breanna, Cristian and I) played ERS, listened to Backsteet boys and NSYNC.  (throwing it back old school 90's style!)

On Saturday Breanna and I (also our mothers) went to a mall about 30 minutes away and had a blast shopping all afternoon. We both purchased some fun stuff. I will try to get around to a spring style post soon.

Sunday afternoon (after church and more wonderful grilled burgers) Breanna and I had an impromptu photo shoot. We tried too look all cool and "model-ish" but alas, it didn't work out for me. I guess I won't quit my day job. This is us, being normal.

Breanna's salute to Angelina Jolie
Breanna is the BBall queen
Look at that form!
Laughing about some inside joke.

Running, with a tennis racket, I'm so coordinated.

Me, trying to give the camera my fiercest look.
I'm obviously giving Tyra a run for her money.
Fierce pose. Artsy camera angle.
All in all it's a win win situation.

Tucking. It's the *thing* to do.

The Hunger Games Movie Review (Some Spoilers)

Last night I went to see the Midnight Premier of The Hunger Games.  It was a very anticipated movie, not only by me and my friends, but by critics and reviews alike.

If you haven't seen the movie or read the books, there are *SPOILERS* from this point on.
I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars. I was tempted to give it 3.5, but there were some scenes that redeemed it.

The movie starts out, unlike the book, with an interview between Seneca and Cesear. I liked this change because it gave the movie a more "real" feel. It didn't seem as if you were watching just another movie, you were plopped right in the middle of the story and you hit the ground running.
One thing that was a major difference is that the movie isn't in Katniss' P.O.V. the whole time like it is in the book. It would've been extremely difficult for director Gary Ross to have stayed true to the book as many things in the book are simply her own thoughts. He was able to skip back and forth through the arena to the Game Makers HQ, to show you what was going on behind the scenes. Plus it gives the Capitol more depth and a more "foreboding" feeling.
There were some little things that they didn't stay true to from the book such as:

  • Madge (Character from the book) being cut out completely. This is understanding because with only 143 minutes in the movie, character development would be difficult if they had to do some back story on her, which would've been somewhat useless.
  • Katniss' Prep Team, you glimpse them once during her makeover but that's it.
  • Gale saying goodbye. In the end of the scene from the book it cuts off with him saying "Katniss, remember I.." and the peacekeeper drag him away. I mean, it could've been anything! He could be saying "Katniss, remember I LOVE YOU!" or "Katniss, remember I forgot to return your Snuggie, remind me when you get back okay?"
  • The Muttations. (Mutts) The book describes them as "wolf like creatures" and they have surprisingly human traits *SPOILER* such as the eyes from the fallen tributes. But in the movie they are more like giant Pit Bulls
  • The death over the backpack Katniss was going for in the opening Cornucopia scene, *SPOILER* where the boy was reaching for it just as she was, then was killed by Clove.
  • There was a LOT of water. In the book the fact that there was little water was stressed. But in the movie there seems to be an abundance.
  • Katniss drugging Peeta. The whole scene with her giving him the sleeping medicine was cut out. Slightly disappointed.
  • Order of deaths. Varied from the book, which doesn't matter much, but surprised me.
  • Not something that was cut out of the movie, but for the Tribute parade, the fire effects were pretty shoddy and the flaming cape didn't give anything special to the costume.

Some of the things they did add which I LOVED were *SPOILERS* :
  • Right after the Cornucopia scene, when they first enter the Arena, Katniss starts running in the woods. In the movie they add where she runs straight into Fox Face and there's an intense moment of them looking back and forth before they both run off.
  • In the training center, there's a scene where Cato and another tribute start arguing about his missing knife and wondering where it is. Then you see Rue up in the rafters holding it. :)
  • Seneca's death. It was perfect. (Wow, that sounds gruesome, but just the way it was portrayed was great)
  • In the scene where Rue dies, they cut to another scene of district 11 giving Katniss the 3 finger salute back, plus a few other things. I was sobbing during this scene and it was probably my favorite in the whole movie. This is the scene that made me bump it up to 4 stars instead of 3.5. Phenomenal.
If anyone knows me they know I DON'T cry during movies. I have only cried while watching Marley and Me and that was only because a month before we had our dog put down. During the Reaping scene I had tears in my eyes and in Rue's scene like I said before I was sobbing.

The only thing that I wasn't very happy about was with the characters they did keep, and didn't cut out there was a lack of development. There didn't seem to be much dialogue in the movie (it could be the fact that it was 2 am and I was tired though) so what I thought to be very pivotal scenes from the book were cut out. This includes many conversations between Katniss and Peeta in and out of the Arena, which resulted in something that seemed almost shallow in their relationship.

I want to go see the movie again when I'm not just barely awake and I'd definitely recommend you going and seeing it if you read and loved the books or just love a good action movie. Was it as good as the book? No. (Is it ever?) But please don't let that discourage you from seeing it!

Hunger Games Nails

Just a quick post!

In case you don't follow me on twitter, i wanted to show you my latest nail art!

Sorry they're pretty messy, I took the photo right after I finished that hand and I didn't want to clean up the edges and risk smudging them. On my ring finger is the Mockingjay and the other fingers are painted to look like the book cover. I'll post new photos when I get a chance to take them!

Keep Calm and Let the Games Begin!

The Hunger Games of course!

I am eagerly (i.e. impatiently) awaiting march 23rd. I already have my tickets purchased for the midnight premier!

I'm going with my friend Liliana who has become somewhat of a movie premier buddy with me. (around my birthday last year we went to the midnight premier of Pirates 4)  We tried convincing Cristian he should join us in our movie going adventure but he refused on account of it being a school night. (Isn't it wonderful to be home schooled?)

Have you read The Hunger Games? The book are fantastic!

Oh there are some of you who haven't? My goodness! You need to pick them up right now! So many people are comparing them to Harry Potter and Twilight which drives me nuts. There isn't anything that is close to Harry Potter (actually I wouldn't know I haven't read the books, correct me if I'm wrong) and comparing it to Twilight makes me want to laugh. Katniss (the main character) is such a strong role whereas in Twilight, Bella is weak. The only resemblance I see between those to is that both Bella and Katniss go into the woods on occasion. (Although one to mourn the loss of her undead boyfriend and the other to hunt and fight for her life)

Such a good looking cast huh? I'll be tweeting about the premier right up until the movie starts then after I'll rate it for you from 1-5 stars. Follow me on twitter to get the updates (link in the side bar!)

Flog the Counterculturalist: Part 2

Hey, you! Don't you roll your eyes at me! You may remember a harangue I wrote about the evils of Facebook a while ago. Well, I was blog-surfing today and I came across something similar about Twitter. I apologize for all of the language. I found it interesting, though, because when I gave up Facebook I started to tweet more, not even realizing how analogous the two are. When you think about it, Twitter is even more narcissistic than Facebook (as are blogs, but let's not get crazy ;-). All it is is taking one interesting event out of your day and explaining it in 140 characters. If you enough it creates a false life that sounds exciting to others and makes you seem pretty important. What they don't see are the mundane, routine parts of your life that make you just like everyone else. However, in Twitter's defense, there definitely isn't as much drama or annoying account-hacking "Hey, this is Fantasia! Janessa is so amazing! I love you, Janessa!!!!11" statuses as Facebook.
Anyway, this was just a note I wanted to make. Another drop in the bucket of my far-fetched dreams of waking up the technology-nursed in this culture. Written on a blog. How hypocritical.

P.S. (From Maddie) So no one entered our contest. Probably because they had no desire to do so, but Breanna and I are going to look at it in a different light... We're giving it the "We obviously have so many overseas followers that they couldn't enter" point of view. We like to think of ourselves as glass half full kind of people.
